Caldero (the local fish and rice stew), fried seafood and sunsets at km 17,5 of La Manga

Chiringuito El Barón is a seafood restaurant on the waterfront of Mar Menor, at km 17,5 of the Gran Vía in La Manga, beside the development that gives it its name. Although it retains 'chiringuito' in its name, it has an indoor dining room and a terrace on the sand. It is known for caldero (the local fish and rice stew), fried fish and very large portions.

What to order from the menu

Caldero, the traditional fish and rice stew from Mar Menor, is the dish most associated with the restaurant. Mixed fried seafood and portion sizes feature in hundreds of reviews, followed by these dishes:

  • Arroz a banda (rice cooked in fish stock) and lobster rice
  • Chopitos and chipirones (small squid)
  • Razor clams and octopus
  • Asiático cake (inspired by Cartagena's liqueur coffee), and homemade desserts highlighted by the restaurant, such as mango cake and pan de Calatrava (bread pudding)

Portions are large, so people usually order a little and add more later. Average spending is around 20 to 30 euros per person. In the morning it also works as a café, serving breakfasts and mid-morning meals.

Bookings and season

El Barón fills up, especially for summer dinners, and the terrace is taken first because it overlooks the sunset on Mar Menor. Book for lunch and dinner. In July and August it opens for lunch and dinner most days. Outside summer, it reduces hours and mainly opens at weekend lunchtimes, so in September and October call before visiting.

Getting here

The restaurant is on the lagoon side of the Gran Vía at km 17,5, in the northern half of La Manga. There is parking nearby, and the entrance, dining room and toilets are wheelchair accessible. It attracts many families with children and groups. To compare other places on the sand, see more beach bars in La Manga.

I love it. It serves customers practically all year. They don't just come to cash in during August. They only close from the December bank holiday weekend to Father's Day. Delicious food, lovely service and unbeatable views. You couldn't be closer to the water.

Beach bar/restaurant well known for the quality of its food. Even with such a wide choice, the quality is very good, portions are generous and prices are great. The rice dishes stand out, especially caldero (the local fish and rice stew), as does the fried fish. Very welcoming for any meal, and the waiting staff are lovely. Highly recommended, never disappoints, everything is delicious!

A restaurant overlooking Mar Menor that has kept expanding its premises. The proof of its success is that you rarely find a table without booking, and there must be a reason. It stands out for rice dishes, fried fish and a wide choice of quality food at very good prices.
