Cruz Memorial Victimas del Sirio

The Cruz Memorial Víctimas del Sirio is a small monument in Cabo de Palos, on Calle Punta Casablanca, dedicated to those who died when the steamship Sirio sank off this coast in 1906. It consists of a memorial plaque and an iron cross, at a spot near the lighthouse that is popular at sunset.

The wreck of the Sirio

The Sirio was a passenger steamship sailing between Génova and Buenos Aires, carrying hundreds of emigrants. It struck the shoals around the Islas Hormigas and sank off Cabo de Palos. The scale of the tragedy has led to it sometimes being called the Titanic of Mediterráneo.

What to expect

The memorial is modest: do not expect a large monument. Several visitors have found only the plaque, without the cross, so its condition may vary between visits. One thing visitors agree on is the sunset from this spot, with the lighthouse lighting the coast as night falls.
