The waterway that replenishes Mar Menor beside Marchamalo

Gola de Marchamalo is a channel linking Mar Menor with Mediterráneo in southern La Manga del Mar Menor, in the municipality of Cartagena and near Salinas de Marchamalo. It is one of La Manga's golas, the channels through which water enters and leaves the lagoon.

What is a gola?

In La Manga, a gola is one of the narrow channels through which water flows between the two bodies of seawater. The Marchamalo channel was formed by the action of water over time and now allows water to pass from one side of the strip to the other.

Why it matters

This flow helps replenish the water in Mar Menor and regulate its salinity and quality, on which the lagoon's flora and fauna depend. The area is therefore also of interest for studying marine ecosystems and water dynamics in the region.
