The island you can reach by wading

Isla del Ciervo is a small island near the southern end of La Manga del Mar Menor, in the municipality of Cartagena, separated from the shore by a channel shallow enough to cross on foot. It is one of the more unusual outings in La Manga: walking through the water is part of the experience.

Getting here

There are three ways to reach it:

  • by wading through knee-deep water, following the route marked by poles
  • by kayak or paddleboard from the shore, taking just a few minutes
  • by boat, on trips that stop at the island for swimming

People who have crossed on foot confirm it is possible, but warn that route-marking poles are sparse and there is seaweed on the bottom, so water shoes are advisable.

What to do on the island

The water is very clear, and the sandy, shallow seabed near the shore lets snorkellers see fish, sea urchins and starfish. Some visitors also take mud baths on the shore. The island is a haven for seabirds too.

What to bring

There are no facilities on the island, no beach bars or toilets, and no rubbish collection, so take everything you bring back with you. Bring water, sun protection and footwear suitable for rocks. To combine the outing with other beaches, see the beaches of La Manga.
