The late-August storms catch someone in their swimwear with no plan B every year. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen: two or three overcast days all season, usually an afternoon downpour that passes within a couple of hours. You don't need a different destination, just a different plan.
The upside of a day like this is that all the usual August queues disappear. Restaurants have tables at one, spas have no waiting list and you can park outside. Make the most of it.
Quick fact
August in La Manga averages 2 to 4 days with some rain, usually between 17:00 and 20:00. Before then, head to the beach; afterwards, have a plan B.
Indoor ideas
The list
- 1Cartagena, 25 minutes away: a Roman theatre, museums and a modernist old town you can explore under covered arcades.
- 2Bowling and arcades on Gran Vía, open late with proper air conditioning.
- 3Saltwater and mud circuit at the Las Salinas spa, with sessions until 21:00.
- 4Follow the rice trail: restaurants that are fully booked throughout August suddenly have a table whenever you like.
And if it clears up by late afternoon, go for it: without direct sun and cooled by the storm, a swim in the Mar Menor can be one of the most pleasant of the summer.
